Pregnancy test question

Ok, I feel dumb asking this because I guess the name kinda says it all, but if you test early do you have to use a one that states so? (EPT, 6 days sooner, ect.) Are they really more sensitive, or do you think it's an advertising scam? What one did you use to find out about your LO? I used a digital Kmart brand one, once I got my BFP I bought a clear blue to keep 'checking' until my first appt. Yeah, yeah... I was one of those women. I never had symptoms though and it freaked me out. Anyways, What brand worked for you?

Re: Pregnancy test question

  • When we started TTC Reed, I bought a bunch of cheapie tests on the internet. I got like 40 of them hahaha! I was able to get a FAINT positive on those at 10 DPO or about 4 days before my missed period. Once I got a faint positive on those, I went out and bought a digital test and took one of those too just for fun.

  • I used the first response early response ones. I was able to test and get a super faint (so faint it looked like a shiny spot where the positive line would be) positive 5 days before AF was due. Not sure if other brands are that sensitive because I never tried anything else. I just took probably 5 of the FRER tests before my first appointment with Ev :).

Pretty much this. I got my internet cheapies from babyhopes, and their product descriptions say they are sensitive enough to test early. I just bought a bunch more in fact.

  • I was an insane POAS-aholic.  I did IVF and was able to get a VERY faint positive 3 days past a 5 day transfer, which translates to 8 dpo.  Super early but it began as a multiple pg.  It was a FRER.  My first pg which I lost, I got my first faint BFP super early as well with a FRER.

  • With DD I had clearblue. I believe I took it one day before my period was due.... This time around I bought a generic kind from buy buy baby and I took it a week early and it was negative and then i did it probably a couple days after and it came up negative. I then retook it the day my period was due and it was positive! I then went to the store and bought a clearblue brand and it was positive as well.

It could depend at time you took it maybe? I don't know I just knew I had to be pregnant from how I felt both times!

  • Haha! If it doesn't work this month, I may order bulk online too! These tests can get expensive!

  • I got a really faint positive line at 10dpo with a cheap off brand grocery store test. Digital CBE was positive the next day too though!

  • It's basically a marketing scheme. When a test turns positive has nothing to do with when your period is due and everything to do with when implantation happens. So sure in some people you MIGHT get a positive 6 days before your period is due but its by no means a guarantee. Also when your period is due entirely depends on when you ovulate so there's no real guarantee you even know when 6 days before is.

  • I used ICs to test out my trigger and then FRERs. I'm actually not a fan of ICs though. With my first PG I had a beta of over 100, plenty high enough for a dark line to show and it was barely there

  • I have a long LP, so I tested on CD 12 and got a faint line with a Target brand test (blue dye, yeah yeah I know they are less accurate than pink dye tests).  I took like 4 more Target tests over the next couple days, then took a digital.  I think I finally quit testing at CD 16 Stick out tongue

  • Thanks ladies for your responses, I'm charting this time around, so it's killing me to wait... But I'd rather wait then be upset/worried about a BFN.

  • I took mine about 12 days after I realized I had missed my period with a CVS brand that had been in my drawers for months! I'm sure it close to expiration.  Let's just say, it was pos right away, and all the following were pos, using the cheapos. haha

  • I used a cheapy test from amazon, like a test strip I dipped into a cup of pee, 10dpo and got my positive.

  • I have a preference for clear blue digital tests.  I know that decipering a line is easy but when it states Pregnant or Not Pregnant it just sinks in faster...lol.

I didn't have symptoms during my first pregnancy but I knew how regular my cycle is and had done the math when DH and I had an "oppsie" moment because I was on antibiotics which off course affects the pill and our back up had a fail.  We didn't think it was possible, silly us  oh well we just started our family about 6 months sooner then we planned.  I stared at the "Pregnant" stating pee stick for 2 hours before it sunk in...lol!  Only took 5 mins to sink in with the second one...but I did expect it more.

    First Response Early Response

Ah, thanks. I got the First Response... And the rest wouldn't click, lol. It was very confusing for me, because when I tested I had no reason to. I just thought I have to pee anyways, so why not- and BAM. I got my BFP on Oct 2nd, and I SWORE my last period was Sept 12th. (in hind sight, implantation bleeding maybe?) it just made no sense to me. So with that date I figured my DD to be June 18th. Then at my 8 week Appt, the dating ultrasound was showing just under 11weeks- so DD was moved to June 10th, And then I had her May 26th. It bothered me that I don't really 'know' when I conceived her. This time around, hopefully it'll be different ;)

I agree, I like the PREGNANT/NOT PREGNANT ones the best too. When it turned pregnant- I kinda blankly stared at it and thought 'where's the NOT?!' then it sunk in... ;)

  • I actually used one from Dollar Tree. Each test has a sensitivty level and the one I used picked up Hgc at the same level as the 6 day sooner one. Are you telling us you may be KU?

  • I also used the dollar Tree  ones. I tested 10dpo and got a very faint line. Took another and then DH insisted on a digital :)

  • I wouldn't call it a scam, somuch as a tactic.  A hpt's ability to detect a pregnancy is related to how much hcg a woman has in her body (which can be HIGHLY different from one pregnancy to the next, even on the same dpo) and the lowest level of hcg it's capable of detecting.

With IVF I know without a doubt the day she was conceived.  I had my beta at 14dpo and my hcg was at 80.4 which is normal but not VERY high.  Assuming a normal rate of doubling, I probably wouldn't have had a positive hcg much earlier than about 12dpo.

This site gives you a good rundown of sensitivity for various brands.

  • I have a friend who is a doctor, she did research and apparently the the equate (walmart) brand detects the earliest as in it is the most sensitive. This was in 2008, I have no idea where she got the info from, but I do trust her.

  • I got my first BFP on a cheap internet test (Wondfo brand, I think) at only 9dpo.  Then I went out and bought a FRER and digi test and both of those were BFPs also.  I proceeded to keep "checking" for weeks and used up all of my tests-probably 20 or 30 in all.  Embarrassed
